Lot 09: Mercury 7 Astronaut, Wally Schirra, Hand Written Letter

Mercury 7 Astronaut Wally Schirra hand wrote, on personal stationary, a letter of his experiences as an astronaut. The letter was written to the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF) for the purpose of creating literature to be used for future Space Camp curriculum, which he instructs on an attached, hand-written note to the ASF Executive Director at the time, Howard Benedict.

The three-page letter was written on Schirra's personal stationary, dated January 11, 1991, and is separated into two parts. The first, "My most impressive experience as an astronaut"; the second, "How does space affect you?" Schirra's letter offers honest answers to some of the most frequently asked questions of astronauts.

Schirra was the only astronaut to fly all three early NASA space programs — Mercury, Gemini and Apollo.
