Lot 33: FLOWN Space Shuttle Thermal Control System Blankets
These particular pieces of Thermal Control System (TCS) insulation protection blankets originally flew in the payload bay aboard Space Shuttle, Atlantis, during the STS-86 mission and on sequential flights as part of Atlantis. One blanket measures 5 1/2" x 6 1/2" x 2 1/2" and the other is 2 1/2" deep with three sides measuring 9" and the fourth at 7".
This insulation was used to help control the extreme temperature variations the astronaut's and their vehicle faced during space travel. Complete with an authentic NASA part number: V070-361900, these blankets were inspected by NASA technicians who decided to discontinue them for use in future orbiter flights, due to rips and tears encountered during their numerous spaceflights, which is indicated on the accompanied documentation.
STS-86 was the seventh Space Shuttle to dock with MIR, and the 20th flight of shuttle Atlantis. This mission was nearly 11 days, with 170 Earth orbits, and logged more than 4.2 million statute miles in space.
