Lot 11: Apollo 16 Vintage Lion Brothers Patch
This Lions Brothers vintage Apollo 16 mission patch was made exclusively for the prime crew, Astronauts Charles Duke, Thomas Mattingly, and John Young as a keepsake and to be given to their family and friends. Astronaut Paul Weitz was granted this patch for his work on the Apollo 16 mission and it has remained in his personal collection ever since.
The patch is over 30 years old and includes a hidden "16" for their mission designation which was a hallmark for all Lion Brothers mission patches.
During the Apollo 16 mission, Young and Duke spent three days exploring the Descartes highland region on the moon's surface and conducting performance tests with the lunar rover. The Astronauts returned with the largest single rock ever brought back to Earth from all the Apollo missions, weighing almost 25 pounds.
This circular patch measures approximately 4" x 4" and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity provided by Skylab II and STS-6 Astronaut Weitz.
