Lot 12: Apollo 16 Crew Signed Insurance Cover

Lot 12: Apollo 16 Crew Signed Insurance Cover

From the personal collection of Apollo 16 Lunar Module Pilot Charlie Duke, this insurance cover is from his mission and signed by Duke and crewmembers, T.K. Mattingly and John Young. The cover is postmarked April 16, 1972, the day the mission launched from Kennedy Space Center.

Insurance covers were a tradition that started with Apollo 11 and ended with the completion of the Apollo program. The Astronauts would all sign covers to be left on Earth in case a tragedy occurred, so they could be sold and the proceeds would benefit the Astronaut's families — not unlike an insurance policy.

The insurance cover is approximately 3.5" x 6.5" in size and bears the Apollo 16 mission insignia on the front cover. It is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from Duke.
