Lot 26: STS-84 FLOWN Blanket

Lot 26: STS-84 FLOWN Blanket

This thermal pillow blanket flew to space as part of Space Shuttle Atlantis on the STS-84 mission, May 15 – 24, 1997. The thermal protection was used to cover splice lines between mated halves of the Dome Heat Shields (DHS), which provide a seal between the moveable engines and a bulkhead compartment filled with nitrogen to prevent fires in the event of a fuel leak. These blankets are the last items to be installed after the DHS to cover up the exposed section of the spliced lines. They have the shape and appearance similar to that of a pillow, hence the name. There are six thermal blankets total, two per engine.

The blanket measures approximately 8.5" x 12" and is accompanied by an official NASA scrap and replacement form with tag, containing its individual NASA identification number and date of inspection, which should serve as a Certificate of Authenticity. The form is also initialed by a NASA Safety Engineer, dated June 7, 1997.

The STS-84 mission marked the 84th shuttle flight and 19th flight for Space Shuttle Atlantis. This was the sixth docking with the Mir space station and the third involving an exchange of United States Astronauts.
