Lot 27: Signed Space Shuttle and MIR Composite Medallion

This medallion contains metal from both the United States Space Shuttle and the Russian space station Mir. The metal was distributed through the Space Flight Awareness program and was presented to Space Shuttle Astronaut Robert Springer while he was with The Boeing Company.

Measuring 1.5" x 1.5", the silver medallion depicts the Shuttle-Mir Patch of the docking between the two vehicles. The medallion is mounted on a paper bi-fold to commemorate the international partnership between the U.S. and Russia in establishing the International Space Station.

As a Mission Specialist aboard the STS-29 mission, Springer and crewmembers released the fourth NASA Tracking and Data Relay Satellite into orbit. They also conducted experiments in plant growth, crystal growth, and the human body's adaptation to weightlessness. Springer's second shuttle mission, STS-38, was a dedicated and classified mission for the Department of Defense.

The medallion cover is inscribed "From the personal collection of Colonel Bob Springer" by Springer and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
