Lot 29: Apollo 10 FLOWN Lunar Module Medallion
This Lunar Module (LM) Medallion was flown to the moon with LM Pilot Eugene Cernan and Commander Thomas Stafford aboard the first LM to reach lunar orbit, Snoopy, during the Apollo 10 mission from May 18-26, 1969 and is from Stafford's personal collection.
Astronauts Cernan and Stafford were within 50,000 feet from the lunar surface when they orbited the moon in the LM and photo-mapped the selected site for the first lunar landing, which occurred during the Apollo 11 mission. Before jettisoning the LM, the Astronauts collected the medallions, and rendezvoused with crewmember John Young in the Command Module for the journey back to Earth. After returning from the mission, the medallion was attached to a 1.5" x 0.5" tie clasp.
Astronaut certified lunar artifacts are considered the most desirable of all flown items and to that end, Stafford has provided an iron clad provenance in the form of a hand signed, personalized Certificate of Authenticity (COA), detailing the medallion's lunar journey.
The medallion and COA have been matted and framed with archival methods.
