Created By The Mercury 7 Astronauts
This professionally-printed reproduction of concept art, depicting the Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL), has been hand-signed by MOL group astronauts Karol "Bo" Bobko, Albert Crews, and Robert Crippen.
The MOL was part of the U.S. Air Force's manned spaceflight program aimed at the eventual use of space stations for reconnaissance purposes. Although the project was cancelled during the height of the Apollo program, many MOL astronauts, including Crippen and Bobko, went on to fly in space. Crippen piloted STS-1 (the first space shuttle flight) and commanded three additional shuttle missions. Bobko piloted STS-6 and commanded two later shuttle missions.
Others, like Crews, continued their careers as NASA test pilots. Before his retirement, Crews flew the "Super Guppy" outsize cargo transport, the WB-57F atmospheric research aircraft and the OV-095 SAIL space shuttle simulator.
The print has been mounted and framed using archival methods alongside a contemporary MOL patch. The final presentation measures 16.25" x 14.25" and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Astronaut Scholarship Foundation Executive Director Tammy Knowles.
