Lot 14: Paul Calle Art Print Signed by 9 Apollo Astronauts

This hand-numbered and signed Apollo Saturn V rocket print, dated July 16, 1969, by American artist Paul Calle includes the striking autographs of Apollo program astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Alan Bean, Gene Cernan, Charlie Duke, Fred Haise, Richard Gordon, Edgar Mitchell, Dave Scott and Jim McDivitt. Each astronaut has included his respective Apollo mission number(s) beneath his signature. The print is number 59/250.

The black ink sketch depicts the Saturn V rocket during takeoff. The piece is mounted in a black metal, 21"x26" frame and double-matted with dark blue and black matting using archival methods and materials, which enhance the appearance and extend the life of the print.

In a space art career spanning more than 40 years, Calle has covered Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle missions. Hired by NASA to cover the Apollo 11 astronauts up close, he was the only artist present with the Apollo 11 crew the morning of July 16, 1969 when they had breakfast and prepared for their historic journey to the Moon. His on-the-spot pen and ink sketches stand as a visual record of the final moments on Earth of three men as they journeyed into space destined to make history for all mankind.
