Lot 14: Skylab Multi-Signed Saturn 1B Model

This Saturn 1B rocket model was assembled and donated to the ASF by Gemini White Room Mechanic Don Black. Mounted on a coated wood base, this model has been signed by the following Skylab astronauts, who added their missions and positions:

Black personalized the base of the model, labeling it "SATURN 1B SKYLAB" and adding the Skylab program insignia and each Skylab mission's insignia above a list of each mission's crew, launch date, and splashdown date. Miniature human figures are affixed at the base of the rocket. On the underside of the base, Black has signed and dated the model "By Don Black 6-5-2012" and added "White room mechanic on Gemini Program 1965-66."

The model itself stands approximately 19" tall. The base measures 6" x 6.75" x 1.75". The Saturn 1B model is two individual pieces. When fully assembled and connected to the base, the complete presentation measures approximately 20.75" tall.

Saturn 1B rockets such as this one were used to ferry three sets of crews to the Skylab space station. The space station itself first launched unmanned on May 14, 1973 aboard a modified Saturn V. It was followed two months later by the Skylab 2 crew on May 25, 1973. Three crews manned the space station during its time in space, ending when the Skylab 4 crew left on February 8, 1974. The Saturn 1B was used one final time in 1975, sending the Apollo crew of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project to its rendezvous with the Soviet crew.

This lot comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by Black. Also included are photos taken as Black signed the models.
