Lot 18: Apollo 13 FLOWN Couch Material

Apollo 13 FLOWN Couch Material
Apollo 13 FLOWN Couch Material

Description

This segment of flown couch material — from the personal collection of Apollo 13 Lunar Module Pilot Fred Haise — was removed from one of the seats in the Apollo 13 Command Module Odyssey, which Haise and Commander James Lovell used during their harrowing journey. The couch restraint system was designed to support three crew members during all phases of the mission, including launch, landing, and in-flight operations. The couch and the seat attenuation system were designed to control the impact loads imposed on the crew during landing and to remain non-functional during all other flight phases.

Haise obtained the approximately 1" x 0.75" segment after Lovell petitioned the Smithsonian Institute to allow the crew to have the material so it could be divided into one-inch squares and given to staff members that worked around the clock to bring the crippled spacecraft home.

The couch segment, alongside 5" x 7" photos of Apollo 13's launch and splashdown (as seen from mission control), has been matted and framed using archival methods. This lot is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by ASF Executive Director Tammy Knowles.

ASF reserves the right to disqualify the high bidder, to reject the high bid, and to accept a bid from a lower bidder, for any reason within their discretion, which shall be exercised in good faith.
