Lot 18: Apollo 14 FLOWN Beta Cloth Signed by Edgar Mitchell

This Beta cloth patch is from the personal collection of Apollo 14 Astronaut, Edgar Mitchell, who carried it to the Moon aboard the Command Module Kitty Hawk from Jan. 31 - Feb. 9, 1971. In addition to his signature, Mitchell has written on the patch, "Flown to the moon aboard Kitty Hawk on Apollo 14".

The insignia patch is printed on material made of fireproof Beta cloth-glass fibers coated with Teflon, which was the same material used on the outer layer of astronauts' spacesuits to protect them from extreme temperatures. This silkscreen cloth is from the same production run as the patches worn by the Apollo 14 crew during the mission.

Apollo 14 was the eighth manned mission in the United States Apollo program, and the third to land on the Moon.

The patch has been matted and framed using archival methods and the final product measures 11.5 x 12.5". This lot is accompanied by a highly detailed Certificate of Authenticity that outlines the Apollo 14 mission priorities and timeline, and which was both written and signed by Mitchell.
