Lot 21: FLOWN to the Moon Surface Apollo 16 Schematics Sheet Segment
From the personal collection of Apollo 16 Moonwalker Charlie Duke, this FLOWN Lunar Module (LM) Pyro System Schematics page segment is part of the LM Data Book that he carried to the Moon in order to complete his mission aboard the Apollo 16 Lunar Module Orion in April1972.
Lunar surface schematics are detailed diagrams designed to give an astronaut crew an overview of every Lunar Module system in case a problem developed while in flight or on the Lunar surface. The schematic section featured here showcases information regarding the "DESCENT ENGINE," "ASCENT ENGINE," and "LAND GEAR CUTTERS," which would have been used to troubleshoot system problems.
From April 16 - April 21, 1972, Duke and Apollo 16 crewmember John Young spent three days exploring the Decartes highland region of the Moon while Thomas Mattingly, the Command Module Pilot, circled overhead in Casper. Moonwalkers Duke and Young collected the largest single chunk of rock returned to Earth by the Apollo astronauts. They also conducted performance tests on the lunar rover, reaching a top speed of just over 10 miles per hour.
The page segment, measuring approximately 5.75 x 1.875", has been paired with an autographed photo of Duke and matted and framed using archival methods.
Astronaut-certified lunar artifacts are considered the most desirable of all flown items and to that end, Duke has provided an iron clad provenance in the form of a hand-signed, personalized Certificate of Authenticity on his official Apollo 16 letterhead, detailing the schematics' lunar journey.
