Lot 24: Skylab 3 Crew Signed Beta Cloth
This Skylab 3 Beta Cloth has been signed by the mission's crew members: Commander Alan Bean, Pilot Jack Lousma and Science Pilot Owen Garriott.
The Skylab 3 insignia is printed on a 9 x 9" piece of material made of fireproof beta cloth-glass fibers coated with Teflon, the same fabric used on the outer layer of spacesuits. It incorporates the official numeric designation for this mission, which was the Roman numeral "II."
The Skylab 3 mission, the second manned Skylab mission that took place from July 28, 1973 - Sept. 25, 1973, provided further proof that humans could survive in space for extended periods of time. Skylab 3 completed 858 Earth orbits and three spacewalks totaling more than 14 hours, and they traveled 24.5 million miles over the course of 59 days.
This lot has been mounted and framed using archival methods and materials that not only enhance the appearance of these items, but also extend their life. It is also accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity signed by ASF Excutive Director, Linn LeBlanc.
