Lot 25: Flown Skylab Space Pen

From the personal collection of Skylab astronaut William Pogue, this NASA-issued silver Fisher AG7 "anti-gravity" Space Pen spent 281 days in space. The pen was carried into space aboard the Skylab station, which launched on May 14, 1973, six months prior to the first astronauts' arrival. Pogue used the pen in space aboard the Skylab station during Skylab 4, which lasted from Nov. 16, 1973 - Feb. 8, 1974.

The long, thin retractable pen has a mid-century modern look and feel. Its part number is "SEB12100051-208" and its serial number is "1289." There is a small piece of Velcro tape near the top of the pen, which helped make it easier to store in outer space. The pen has two buttons. The main button, common to the top end of all retractable pens, extends the pen's ballpoint nib. A separate button on the side of the pen disengages the internal catch, allowing the pen to retract.

Skylab was America's first experimental space station, designed to prove that humans could live and work in space. Three crews of Skylab astronauts lived aboard the station, at three separate times, for a total of 171 days and 13 hours.

The pen is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Pogue.
