Lot 26: Skylab 4 Crew Signed Beta Cloth
This Skylab 4 Beta Cloth has been signed by the mission's crew members: Commander Jerry Carr, Pilot Bill Pogue and Science Pilot Ed Gibson.
The Skylab 4 insignia is printed on a 9 x 9" piece of material made of fireproof beta cloth-glass fibers coated with Teflon, the same fabric used on the outer layer of spacesuits. It incorporates the official numeric designation for this mission, which was the Arabic numeral "3."
The Skylab 4 mission, the third manned Skylab mission that took place from Nov. 16, 1973 - Feb. 8, 1974, provided further proof that humans could survive in space for extended periods of time. Skylab 4 completed 1,214 Earth orbits and four spacewalks totaling more than 16 hours, and they traveled 34.5 million miles over the course of 84 days.
This lot has been mounted and framed using archival methods and materials that not only enhance the appearance of the items, but also extend its life. It is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity signed by ASF Excutive Director, Linn LeBlanc.
