Lot 29: STS-26 Silver Robbins Medallion

This sterling silver medallion, from the personal collection of space shuttle astronaut Don Williams, is one of 182 produced by the Robbins Company commemorating the 26th space shuttle mission and seventh flight of the orbiter Discovery. As the first mission to launch after the Challenger disaster, which occurred more than two years earlier, STS-26 was dubbed the "Return to Flight."

The design on the face is a raised representation of the mission insignia, designed by artist Stephen R. Hustvedt. The predominant themes include a new beginning (sunrise), a safe mission (stylized launch and plume), building upon the traditional strengths of NASA (the vector, which on the original NASA insignia, symbolizes aeronautics), and a remembrance of their seven colleagues who lost their lives aboard Challenger (the seven-starred Big Dipper).

The back side of the medallion bears the raised word "LAUNCHED," with the date of September 29, 1988, and word "LANDED" with the date of October 3, 1988. Both sides of the medallion bear the surnames of the five crewmembers: Dick Covey, Rick Hauck, David Hilmers, John Lounge, and George "Pinky" Nelson.

This medallion measures approximately 1.5" in diameter. It comes in its original plastic case, labeled COIN 95. Robbins medals such as this one were only made available to astronauts as commemorative pieces.

A certificate of authenticity signed by Astronaut Scholarship Foundation Executive Director Tammy Knowles accompanies this lot.
