Lot 35: Flown STS-1 Silver Robbins Medallion

From the personal collection of astronaut Don Williams (Pilot STS-51D, Commander STS-34), This STS-1 (Columbia) Silver Robbins Medallion boasts the known-to-be-flown serial number, "90 F," around the rim.

This 35mm sterling silver medal is approximately 1.5" in diameter, with a raised design on the face of the mission insignia, the mission, and the astronauts' names. The reverse of the medal is engraved with the launch date, April 12, 1981, and landing information, "April 14, 1981 RW23 Edwards AFB." (RW23 refers to runway 23 on the dry lakebed. It comes encapsulated in its original clear plastic case.

STS-1 was the first orbital flight of the shuttle, launched on April 12, 1981, and returning to Earth two days later.

Made by the Robbins Company of Attleboro, Massachusetts, astronauts who are in line for a flight have the option of purchasing the medallions for themselves, family, and friends as personal souvenirs. The medals are made available only to the astronauts. At the conclusion of a flight, the tokens are sent back to Robbins, where they are engraved on the reverse, polished, numbered, and returned to the astronauts. The dyes are later destroyed.

A Certificate of Authenticity signed by Astronaut Scholarship Foundation Executive Director Linn Leblanc accompanies this lot.
