Lot 37: Signed Scobee Portrait
This 8x10" NASA-issued lithograph of the late Francis "Dick" Scobee is signed by the astronaut and features a personalized inscription that reads, "ROY - VERY BEST WISHES."
The original photo used to produce this lithograph was taken while Scobee was an astronaut candidate. In it, he is wearing his blue NASA flight suit. The outline of a model Space Shuttle can be seen behind him. The lithograph comes mounted and framed using archival methods.
Scobee first flew in Challenger as its pilot on mission STS-41-C, which lasted from April 6 - 13, 1984. The flight had two objectives: to deploy the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF), a large cylinder carrying 57 scientific experiments, and to capture, repair and redeploy the malfunctioning Solar Maximum Mission satellite, or "Solar Max." Highlights of the mission were filmed using an IMAX movie camera, and the results appeared in the IMAX movie The Dream is Alive. Scobee then commanded STS-51-L, the Challenger mission of Jan. 28, 1986, when he and his crew made the ultimate sacrifice.
This lot comes accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Astronaut Scholarship Foundation Executive Director Linn LeBlanc.
