Lot 39: STS-61 FLOWN Polo Shirt & Signed Photo
Worn in space by Shuttle astronaut Tom Akers during the first Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission (STS-61), this brightly colored polo shirt flew aboard Space Shuttle Endeavor for 11 days, from Dec. 2-13, 1993, as part of Aker's Personal Preference Kit (an astronaut's personal belongings).
This short-sleeved, NASA-issued collared shirt is magenta with the words "STS-61 Endeavor" embroidered in white on the front left breast. This shirt is a 100% cotton men's large made in the U.S.A. It has been a part of Akers's personal collection since 1993
This shirt comes with a 6.25'' x 4'' photograph of Akers wearing it alongside fellow astronaut Story Musgrave on orbit in Endeavor, with the Hubble Space Telescope visible in space through the payload bay windows behind them. Both shirt and photograph have been framed and matted together using archival methods.
Lasting 11 days and requiring a total of five spacewalks (an all-time record) in order to repair and upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope, STS-61 is one of the most complex in Shuttle history. Akers performed two space walks STS-61, during which he and fellow astronauts replaced HST's solar arrays and installed a corrective optics package.
This lot comes accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Akers.
