Lot 9: Apollo 16 Lunar Surface EVA Maps Signed by Duke

These two maps, a contour map and a grid map, were produced for the Apollo 16 mission and depict the Descartes region of the Moon, what was to be that mission's lunar EVA activity. Apollo 16 Lunar Module Pilot Charlie Duke has signed the contour map, adding "Apollo 16 LMP" below his name. Both maps detail the lunar landing site, survey points, and the intended path of the lunar EVAs. Maps similar to these were used by the astronauts during training; maps that were used during the actual flight were coated.

Apollo 16 was the 10th manned mission in the Apollo program and the fifth mission to land on the Moon. On this 11-day mission, Commander John Young and LMP Duke spent 71 hours on the lunar surface. They spent more than 20 hours on the lunar surface and drove the Lunar Roving Vehicle more than 16 miles on the surface of the moon. Young and Duke collected 211 pounds of lunar samples for return to Earth, while Command Module Pilot T.K. Mattingly orbited in the Command Module above.

The two 8" x 10" maps have been matted and framed together using archival methods. The framed presentation also includes Apollo 16 crew patch, produced in a limited quantity by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation for the mission's 40th anniversary. A careful examination of the patch will show the initials "ASF" sewn into the patch. The final presentation measures 16" x 29.25" and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Astronaut Scholarship Foundation Executive Director Tammy Knowles.
