Created By The Mercury 7 Astronauts
Presented directly to the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation by Rick Armstrong, the son of Neil Armstrong, this crew-signed Apollo 11 Insurance Cover is the first to be released by a member of the Armstrong family. This is a Type 3 cover, the rarest of the Apollo 11 insurance covers created. This highly collectible authentic Apollo 11 Mission Emblem Cachet Insurance Cover was signed prior to the launch of Apollo 11 by the entire crew: Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin. It bears the postal cancellation date of July 16, 1969, Kennedy Space Center. On the back side of the cover, Rick Armstrong has signed and inscribed "This cover is from the personal collection of the Armstrong family."
Since astronauts were unable to obtain large life insurance policies because of their risky missions, postal covers were signed and left behind for the crew families to sell in the event of a disaster. To be an authentic Insurance Cover it must have been signed while the astronauts were in quarantine prior to launch.
