Prior to joining Northrop Grumman, Mastracchio had a distinguished career at NASA, serving in roles such as engineer, flight controller, program manager, and astronaut. He completed three Space Shuttle missions and one long-duration mission aboard the International Space Station, logging 188 days in space and conducting nine spacewalks. Notably, he played a key leadership role in emergency ISS repairs during Expedition 38/39 and led spacewalk teams during both STS-118 and STS-131 missions.

His NASA career also included critical technical and managerial roles such as Deputy Branch Chief and lead designer for cockpit upgrades, as well as Orion spacecraft development and flight operations leadership. His early contributions as a Space Shuttle flight controller involved solving complex guidance and navigation challenges during 17 missions.
